Taxes to Trails: Future of 39 Mile Trail Depends on 1% Sale Tax

Less than half a mile of trail has been opened for public use in Athens.  That may not sound like much, but bikers and runners say it is great. The segment is part of the much longer 39 mile Firefly Trail.  This new segment of the trail connects eastern downtown Athens with Dudley park with a bridge that crosses the North Oconee River.

The election is on November 7.  That is when registered Athens voters can vote on the TSPLOST referendum. Supporters say The Firefly Trail would provide an alternative transportation route for pedestrians, bikers, and other non-motorized vehicles. Athens-Clarke County voters can register to vote, find their polling location, and answer voting-related questions here.
